Our history

Dr. Keith Johnson

DCIDS was an innovative initiative born of necessity. Dialysis Clinic, Inc., otherwise known as DCI, was conceived in 1971 by Dr. Keith Johnson to provide affordable dialysis services to the increasing number of patients suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD). As an assistant professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Johnson enlisted a team of nephrologists to replicate the outpatient dialysis clinic model, originally invented by Dr. Belding Scribner, to treat ESRD patients in Tennessee.

With steadfast dedication to his patients, Dr. Johnson did not stop there. Rather, he pursued opportunities to facilitate kidney and other organ and tissue donation, and in 1972, DCI established Dialysis Clinic Incorporated Donor Services, or DCIDS, under his pioneering leadership. Later, Dr. Johnson leveraged his national network and personal relationships to bring New Mexico Donor Services and Sierra Donor Services into the DCI family in 1984 and 1985, respectively. In September of 1991, DCI Donor Services was chartered as a separate nonprofit corporation to provide an administrative structure for its organ and tissue recovery organizations, creating a cohesive framework to improve service to the local communities.

Currently, DCIDS operates three organ procurement organizations, an eye bank and a tissue bank. These operations are New Mexico Donor Services, Sierra Donor Services, and Tennessee Donor Services, Sierra Donor Services Eye Bank, and DCIDS Tissue Bank.

While involved on a national scale, DCIDS’ primary focus is serving its local communities. Each DCIDS location is structured to support its activities and operations. Today, our independent nonprofit company increases access to donation and transplantation services for more than 100,000 individuals on the national transplant waiting list.
