New Mexico Donor Services (NMDS) has been a member of DCI Donor Services since 1984 and serves the entire state of New Mexico, or 1.7 million people. Its offices are headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico. NMDS provides both organ and tissue services to the families of New Mexico. NMDS transplant centers are Presbyterian Hospital and University Hospital, both in Albuquerque. The focus of the NMDS staff is to provide every New Mexico family the opportunity of donation at the time of a loved ones death. This will be realized through continued hospital development and professional and community education programs. Donor ethnicity is divided between Caucasian, non-white Hispanics and Native American. NMDS has one of the highest consent rates for non-white Hispanics in the United States. Additionally, NMDS averages one Native American donor per year and continues to work to increase the participation of this segment of their population through the Minority Organ and Tissue Transplant Education Program. The Medical Directors are Lawrence J. Gibel, M.D. and William Sterling, M.D. Pat Niles serves as the NMDS Executive Director. The public education coordinator is Maria Sanders.
Say
"yes" to saving lives! When you obtain your New Mexico driver's license or ID card, you will be asked if you want to be an organ donor. A red heart is printed on your driver’s license or ID card symbolizes your love of life and your wish to help others in need.
New
Mexico State Laws support Starting on January 1, 2003,
the donation decision on your driver’s license or ID card is a legal directive
under the New Mexico Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (Chapter 24, Article 6A NMSA
1978) and (Chapter 66, Article 5, NMSA 1978). If your license was issued
before Jan. 2003, you can add a donation sticker on the back of your license to
make your donation decision legal. Free stickers are available at your
local MVD, by calling New Mexico Donor Services office at 843-7672 or
1-800-843-7672 or by email at msanders@dcids.org.
If you are at least 16 years
old and have signed up to be a donor on your driver's license, donor card, or
advance healthcare directive indicating that you want to be a donor, qualified
medical personnel have the legal authority to carry out your wishes after death.
If you are younger than 16, you can still be a donor, but a parent or guardian
needs to give permission.
