Dialysis Clinic, Inc. (DCI) and DCI Donor Services, Inc. (DCIDS) jointly celebrate April as the 10th annual National Donate Life Month. Originally a weeklong observance, it was officially recognized as a month-long event in 2003.  The celebration commemorates those who have received or continue to wait for lifesaving transplants.

“While increasing the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors that save and heal lives is part of our daily work,” says Jill Grandas, DCIDS Corporate Executive Director, “this month serves, not only to honor the lives of those who have given and received, it is also an opportunity to renew our commitment to save and enhance lives.”

There are now 114 million registered donors in the United States, with 1.8 million from the state of Tennessee, where both DCI and DCIDS are headquartered.  For Tennessee, this represents only 32% of the state’s population but, the number of people in need of transplants continues to rise.  The solution to this problem is to continue educating the public about the lifesaving effects of donation and transplantation and get them to make their decision known by signing up through their state donor registry.

“DCI is in the business of dialyzing patients, across the country, and a very important part of our health care spectrum is that many of our patients are those who may be waiting for an organ transplant,” said Dr. H. Keith Johnson, DCI Chief Executive Officer and DCIDS founder and board member.  “The important work done by DCIDS and through their family of organizations helps thousands of people in need of an organ transplant.”

DCIDS manages organ procurement organizations in California (serves the Sacramento, CA and Reno, NV area), New Mexico (serves entire state) and Tennessee (serves majority of the state of Tennessee, south west Virginia and north Georgia areas).  In 2011, these organizations facilitated the following number of transplants:

“This perspective is important, not only to the people and lives that these numbers represent, but as well as to the staff and family of DCI and DCIDS,” said Johnson.  “We strive to keep the main thing, the main thing by focusing on the patients we serve, the families who support and honor the wishes of those we serve, as well as the healthcare professionals who help us extend care to those we serve.”
