In early 1999, TDS began its preparation for accreditation through its professional organization, the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO). Those familiar with the process hospitals go through to be accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospitals can begin to understand this process was quite an undertaking.

Months were spent fine-tuning policies, training manuals, and reviewing donor records to identify areas TDS felt improvement was necessary and in order to be compliant with standards set forth by AOPO.

During the course of our preparation, several committees were developed and assigned tasks related to compliance. The following committees were developed and continue to function for maintenance and continuous improvement of TDS services.

Quality Assurance Committee (QA): Established to monitor and address issues regarding donor documentation and identify trends through donor chart audit. QA has identified an array of “systems” issues designed to monitor TDS’ practices for consistency and efficiency.

Public Education Committee (PE): Established to provide an opportunity for PE coordinators from around the state to share ideas. A strategic plan was developed to strengthen the groups’ efforts overall and map their direction.

Hospital Services Committee (HS): Established to develop consistent reporting measures, standardize hospital plan format, and data presentation methods. This group has also developed consistent death record review collection and reporting mechanisms and educational program outlines.

Safety Committee: Established to address OSHA requirements, exposure plan and implementation, and fire safety issues. This committee assures that education and documentation requirements are kept up to date and accurate.

Overall, preparation for accreditation solidified our staff in a way that we have never seen and has moved TDS from being very effective to outstanding in our accomplishments.
