Clergy Conference Planned The Clergy Conference, which precedes National Donor Sabbath Weekend (November 12, 13 and 14), will be held at the Maxwell House hotel in Nashville on the morning of October 14. It is at this half-day event that clergy who wish to participate in the November event learn about organ donation and get ideas for religious services in support of organ and tissue donation. The religious perspectives of death and donation will be discussed. Speakers will include Jill Maxfield, Executive Director of Tennessee Donor Services; Donna Spencer, the mother of a 16 year-old donor; Gay Eisen, whose life was saved by a liver transplant; Rabbi Ronald Roth; Kate Payne, Director of Ethics at St. Thomas Hospital; and Rev. Karla Buchanan. Jennifer Griffith and Misty Armour from the Tennessee Donor Services Public Education office will also speak. We will have materials for clergy to take with them for distribution to their congregations. Clergy who would like to participate can call (615) 234-5265 and give their names, phone numbers and mailing addresses. Information will be mailed immediately. Celebration of Life Planned for April 22, 2004 On April 22, 2004, Tennessee Donor Services will celebrate National Donate Life Month by honoring donors, recipient, their families and all the loved ones we have lost. The event, which centers around a moving candle light ceremony, will be held at the Donor Memorial Park at the corner of 16th Avenue North and Church Street. The ceremony includes donor and recipient stories and a special guest speaker followed by a reception. This is an opportunity to meet the families who made the decision to donate life at the time of a loved one's death and to hear from people who are alive today only because of the organ donor program. We will meet people who are on the transplant waiting list as well as people whose loved ones died while waiting for a donor organ. The Celebration of Life will begin at 5:30 P.M. on April 22nd and will be held rain or shine. For more information please call the public education office at 1-888-234-4440.
