Recently, the realization of the need for specialized marketing staff has gained momentum in the OPO industry. The OPOs that understand marketing principles, understand that the services they provide to a hospital must answer the needs of those responsible for affecting donation. Developing and implementing customized action plans designed to increase donation and assessing key client needs are included in this marketing plan. When marketing concepts and strategies are understood, supported and practiced consistently in OPOs, referrals and donation rates increase.

All DCIDS programs have migrated to a marketing philosophy, and without exception, referral numbers, donors and the quality of our relationships with our hospitals have improved.

Strategies of this approach include:

bulletDedicated staff member for each hospital account providing a single point of service
bulletFormulation of comprehensive hospital profiles and needs assessment for each target hospital
bulletDevelopment of customized hospital specific action plans
bulletRounds in key areas of hospitals
bulletPhysician and nursing education
bulletRoutine meetings with key clients
bulletRegional seminars
bulletPost-donor and post-referral follow-up
bulletReferral process analysis
bulletHospital policy and procedure review
bulletAggressive tracking of progress of each plan
bulletDevelopment of collateral educational materials

DCIDS also has developed data systems to record and track the volumes of information that partnerships with hospitals produce. DCIDS felt this was needed to improve information flow across the board and decrease the liability of "individual specific" data.

Also new to the Tennessee region, in support of the aforementioned law, was the development of a Designated Requestor program. This program was designed by the hospital development staff to educate and certify hospital personnel as requestors in the donation process.

The program has been very well received by hospitals in this area with over four hundred designated requestors from 43 hospitals certified since the program began in the spring of 1998.
