Dear Religious Leaders:

We ask that you join with other faith communities throughout Tennessee and the U.S. in observing National Donor Sabbath, the weekend of November 12,13 and 14, 2004, to increase awareness about the critical need for organ and tissue donations. The eighth annual interfaith celebration is a special time in which faith communities unite to stress the importance of organ and tissue donation.

As a religious leader, you can join this life-saving effort by talking to your congregates about organ and tissue donation, an opportunity to share the greatest gift of all- life. Most major religions support organ and tissue donation as an honored and compassionate expression of generosity and love. Click here to view last year's Donor Sabbath packet.  It includes bulletin ideas, a list of religious views on donation and an information request form that you can fill out and send in to us for further information and help planning your Donor Sabbath celebration.  The 2004 packet will be available later this year.

The need for life-saving donations continues to climb. Right now there are almost 84,000 men, women, and children waiting for a life-saving transplant. Each day 17 people die waiting for an organ transplant. One organ and tissue donor can save and enhance the lives of over 100 people. Close to 25,000 people were saved last year through the miracle of organ donation. Over 800,000 people received life enhancing tissue transplants, cornea from eyes allowing people with certain kinds of blindness to see again, skin for burns and bone grafts.  The number of organ and tissue donors remains almost the same, even though the need continues to increase.

Celebrate the Gift of Life by spreading the word…

bulletGive a sermon about making a decision to save lives through donation. Many people mistakenly believe that their religion does not support donation, because it has never been addressed.
bulletRead “To Remember Me” poem to your congregation, or include in a newsletter or bulletin.
bulletHold a candle lightening ceremony and ask families to talk about saving lives.
bulletPass out donor cards after the service and have them available for all members.
bulletFeature an article in your newsletter about donation and transplantation. Highlight a member of your congregation that has benefited from donation, or who has left a legacy through donation.
bulletInclude donation information on your bulletin, web site or e-mail.
bulletDiscuss religious misconceptions about organ and tissue donation in classes or workshops.
bulletInvite congregation members who want to share their own story about donation and transplantation.

To get started simply fill out the Information Request Form  in our Donor Sabbath packet and return it to Tennessee Donor Services by fax or mail. We would like to know about any activities within your congregation that help you promote life-saving donations during Nation Donor Sabbath or at anytime during the year. We thank you for your commitment to educate your congregation about organ and tissue donation.
