In the summer of 1998 DCIDS added a 24-hour/7 day per week call center to handle incoming referral calls to some of our DCIDS locations. The call center is responsible for screening and documenting referral calls and working with the hospital to guide a timely and compassionate approach of a potential donor's family. If consent is obtained, the donor call is forwarded to the tissue recovery personnel on call for that area. Organ referrals are handled in person by a coordinator who can counsel the family on their options. This is a very exciting development for DCIDS, and our hope is to improve the quality of service to our hospitals. The call center concept was driven by the passage of laws and regulations that require hospitals to call on every death. We are happy to report the results of those regulations have been a dramatic increase in referrals and tissue donors. Each DCIDS location is committed to increasing referrals and donations through innovative approaches such as these. The entire Triage Services department is dedicated to helping the organization meet the needs of the community by providing outstanding customer service, thorough referral screening and compassionate family support. The department is staffed with caring professionals who are segmented into four teams, each consisting of triage coordinators, who perform 90% of all referral screening, and team leaders, who assist with advanced referral screening and compassionately counsel newly bereaved families regarding their donation options. Regular continuing education inservices help the staff to stay abreast of frequently changing medical criteria and to remain focused on providing excellent customer service in all our interactions. |
