NATIONAL ORGAN AND TISSUE DONOR AWARENESS WEEK 2003-- ACTIVITIES REACH HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS

National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week (NOTDAW), held every April, is a time set aside for Americans across the country to recognize the importance of organ and tissue donation and to remember donors and their families who have given the ultimate gift—LIFE. This year more than 368,000 residents throughout Mountain Region’s service area learned more about organ donation through many different campaigns and a total of 167 activities.

Over 50 local public libraries and college libraries participated in the “Check Out Organ Donation” Library Campaign.  They gave over 9,000 bookmarks to their patrons with facts about donation and detachable donor cards.  The books “Our Hero--Freebird” and “The Nicholas Effect”, both about organ donation, were featured in libraries this month and several libraries submitted press releases about the campaign to local newspapers.

Pharmacies and dialysis clinics also joined the campaign by placing paycheck inserts in their customers’ bags and displaying posters and table tents in their facilities.  39 pharmacies and all 10 dialysis clinics in our area participated.  These efforts reached over 7,500 customers and patients.

The “You Have the Power to Save Lives” utility company campaign reached more than 1,000 residents.  Utility companies placed messages about organ and tissue donation on their billing statements throughout the month.

Local Pal’s Restaurants helped spread the message through their popular signs.  And several other businesses participated in NOTDAW as well including Northeast Tennessee Regional Health Department, Cherokee Restaurant, The Red Rooster Restaurant, Health Resources in the Mall at Johnson City, Wellmont Wellcare at Ft. Henry Mall, Viking Hall Civic Center, and Bristol Motor Speedway.  These efforts reached more than 100,000 area residents.

All 30 Food City stores throughout northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia commemorated National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week by placing inserts with detachable donor cards in their customers’ grocery bags throughout the week.  Their commitment and efforts shared the donation message with more than 200,000 Food City customers!!

The staff of Mountain Region Donor Services is very grateful for the support and help of these more than 150 area businesses and the hard-working volunteers who helped make this year’s NOTDAW observance a tremendous success.

WE THANK YOU!!
